Iran is major threat to the world: Israeli foreign minister

During his first visit to Peru, part of a tour of Latin America in which he said that nations like Brazil and Iran may mediate in the peace process in the Middle East, Foreign Affairs Minister Avigdor Lieberman insisted that the world must unite to avoid consequences.

We believe that the situation with Iran is really the biggest threat not only to Israel but to the entire world, said the minister. We believe that the Iranians must stop, he said to journalists in the Peruvian capital.

If the scheme comes to nuclear power is a threat to the whole world, he said.

Lieberman complete its journey through Latin America in Colombia, after having visited Peru, Brazil and Argentina, a region in which he said that Israel is seeking to be more active.

In Brazil, the largest economy in the region, Lieberman noted the good relationship between the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to Arab countries as an advantage so you can convince the Iranians to halt its nuclear program and the Palestinians to talk directly with Israel.

Israel has a dispute with the Palestinians by the occupation of territories of the West Bank and East Jerusalem and now the peace talks are frozen by the Jewish settlements.

While the problem with Iran is derived from the nuclear program that Tehran defends as necessary to generate electricity for peaceful purposes but Western nations fear the real goal is making atomic bombs.

For Lieberman, The best solution is to impose sanctions in the UN and we hope that the UN meeting in September will bring real change to the Iranian problem.

The UN held a General Assembly in late September to discuss possible sanctions against Iran. Of course, nations like United States are making efforts to obtain a commitment to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear plan.

The president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, has called for the destruction of Israel in the comments Jewish state often cited as a reason behind its campaign to halt the nuclear development of the Islamic republic.
