Taliban attack UN personnel in Kabul leaves 12 dead

A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the fact, in addition to rocket attacks against the presidential palace and the most luxurious hotel in town.

The head of the UN mission in Afghanistan Kai Eide, said the attack did not prevent United Nations continue with all its tasks in the country. One of the six dead were American UN, said the U.S. embassy.

One of the rockets did not explode, but the lobby filled with smoke, forcing guests and employees to flee the basement, according to an Afghan witness.

President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack as an inhumane act and urged the army and police to reinforce security around all international organizations .

Zabiula Mujahid Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attacks in a phone call to The Associated Press. He said three militants armed with explosives belts, grenades and machine guns carried out the attack on the residence of the UN.

He said that three days ago the Taliban issued a threat to all who worked in the runoff election on 7 November between Karzai and former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah.

This is our first attack, he threatened.
