Nuclear Agency concerned that Iran is producing weapons

The report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) appeared to stand on the side of Germany, France, England and Israel. These nations and others allied to the United States have disputed the conclusions of U.S. intelligence assessment published three years ago that said it appeared that Tehran had suspended nuclear work in 2003.

The U.S. assessment could be reviewed and analyzed the new account by its intelligence agencies. While officials continue to say that the conclusion of 2007 was valid at the time, have not ruled out the possibility that Tehran resumed work sometime later.

Iran denies any interest in developing nuclear weapons . But the confidential report, which was released to The Associated Press, said that Tehran”s failure to attempts by the agency to investigate its nuclear program “raises concerns about possible military dimensions to Iran”s nuclear program.”

Ali Asghar Soltanieh, Iran”s envoy to the IAEA, told the official IRNA news agency that the report “verified the peaceful nature and non-military nuclear activities in Iran.”

But in Washington, State Department spokesman PJ Crowley said the findings were consistent with what has been telling the secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton “our concerns about ongoing activities by Iran.”

Writing the report , written first by Yukiya Amano, who became the leader of the IAEA in December, appeared to be more critical of Iran”s refusal to cooperate with the IAEA that many of those compiled by his predecessor, Mohamed ElBaradei.

The 10 page report of the IAEA, released Thursday, does not go into any specifics, and several of the allegations had appeared in previous reports. But a senior international official familiar with the investigation of Iran said the agency continued to receive new information from member nations on activities allegedly connected with attempts to build nuclear weapons.
