Six cities in Southern California come together to improve the quality of education

“For years our schools, being in poor communities, have not had sufficient resources to develop high quality education,” Efe said Teresa James, Deputy Mayor Bell and treasurer of the Coalition of the Southeast Cities Schools (SCSC) .

The SCSC, composed of Bell, Cudahy, Huntington Park, Lynwood, Maywood, South Gate and Vernon, started four years ago in response to common problems like school overcrowding, lack of credentialed teachers and poor community involvement.

“To counter these weaknesses, we come together to create a unified work SCSC allowing the best solution of common problems in our schools” he said.

According to James work together has allowed support initiatives that benefit local communities.

“Following that, there only more schools were built in our area if they have built more in line with the needs of our people, “he said.

SCSC recently joined the rejection of the city of Maywood to the decision of the Unified School District (LAUSD) to build a new school.

Maywood leaders argued that the site chosen by the district to build the new school was not appropriate because they had to demolish many homes were in areas at risk of pollution and affected business too.

1000As a result, LAUSD withdrew the proposal which was accepted by the leaders of the city and its inhabitants.

The coalition seeks to be “the voice and the means to improve schools and education in the southeast area cities,” according to his agent said Ramon Miramontes, during the presentation of the achievements and objectives of the coalition, made before the Council of Vernon.

Another highlight of the meeting yesterday was that it was agreed that the LAUSD District 6, which SCSC cities belong-not to divide.

“There was a project to merge the districts by reducing their number and that would have meant that the coalition schools belong to different districts which would have been a disadvantage for our work together, “said James.

The coalition has also formed groups to assess the success of the new schools that will open in September as part of the reform program LAUSD.

So, the academic programs of different subjects that has achieved success in today”s schools, “will be implemented in these new schools building on the successful results”

Another initiative recently approved by the SCSC seeks work with preschool institutions and funds looking for places to establish new centers for the community.

Guided by studies showing that children who attend preschool do better academically future, the coalition will seek to increase the coverage, which currently stands at nearly 10,000 children-to bring the total to about 25,000 small to need this preparation.

The project will benefit not only children by providing early education, but parents who work, allowing them to “their children are in child care and preschool with a curriculum and not just in particular places where merely” caretakers ” but do not have adequate strategies for education, “noted Deputy Mayor Bell.

” We are very strong: we have to harness that power through our actions in our community to ensure a future better for young people because they are our future, “said Ana Maria Rizo, mayor of Maywood and alternate member of SCSC.
